چکیده

On November 13, 2002, the tank ship Prestige-Nassau caused an oil spill off the coast of Galicia (northwest Spain) during a severe storm. The ship travelled first to the north and later southward, while the fuel continued to leak out. The amount of spilled oil at this point was estimated to be about 10,000 tons. The ship split in half and sunk on November 19 at the southern edge of the Galician Bank, 133 nautical miles from the Galician coast and in 3500 m of water, spilling ca 11,000 tons of oil. The oil spill caused extensive damage along the coast of Galicia and the Bay of Biscay. An Office of Nearshore Surveillance was created by the Fisheries Department of the Galician Government (Consellería de Pesca e Asuntos Marítimos, Xunta de Galicia). People were also recruited from the Galician Regional Meteorological Service (MeteoGalicia Consellaría de Medio Ambiente) and the Spanish Institute of Oceanography. The main objectives were the monitoring and the forecasting of the slicks near the Galician coast. On November 30, the main spill arrived at Galicia, damaging most of the coast. The spill’s movement was monitored by overflights and its path was forecast with different models. The combination of surface wind drift and ocean currents shows an agreement with the observations.

Long-term reproductive impairment in a seabird after the Prestige oil spill.

Large oil spills are dramatic perturbations on marine ecosystems, and seabirds are one of the worst affected organisms in such events. It has been argued that oil spills may have important long-term consequences on marine organisms, but supporting evidence remains scarce. The European shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis) was strongly impacted at population level by the Prestige oil spill, the bigge...

Efficient tools for marine operational forecast and oil spill tracking.

Ocean forecasting and oil spill modelling and tracking are complex activities requiring specialised institutions. In this work we present a lighter solution based on the Operational Ocean Forecast Python Engine (OOFε) and the oil spill model General NOAA Operational Modelling Environment (GNOME). These two are robust relocatable and simple to implement and maintain. Implementations of the opera...

Monitoring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon pollution in the marine environment after the Prestige oil spill by means of seabird blood analysis.

In this study we tested the use of seabird blood as a bioindicator of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pollution in the marine environment. Blood cells of breeding yellow-legged gulls (Larus michahellis) were able to track spatial and temporal changes consistent with the massive oil pollution pulse that resulted from the Prestige oil spill. Thus, in 2004, blood samples from yellow-legged g...

EROD activity and stable isotopes in seabirds to disentangle marine food web contamination after the Prestige oil spill.

In this study, we measured via surgical sampling hepatic EROD activity in yellow-legged gulls from oiled and unoiled colonies, 17 months after the Prestige oil spill. We also analyzed stable isotope composition in feathers of the biopsied gulls, in an attempt to monitor oil incorporation into marine food web. We found that yellow-legged gulls in oiled colonies were being exposed to remnant oil ...

Ten Years after the Prestige Oil Spill: Seabird Trophic Ecology as Indicator of Long-Term Effects on the Coastal Marine Ecosystem

Major oil spills can have long-term impacts since oil pollution does not only result in acute mortality of marine organisms, but also affects productivity levels, predator-prey dynamics, and damages habitats that support marine communities. However, despite the conservation implications of oil accidents, the monitoring and assessment of its lasting impacts still remains a difficult and daunting...
